Pennsylvania - German Fraktur

The term Fraktur means "Broken letter" and originally refered to a style of lettering used on important Pennsylvania - German documents between 1749 and 1860. When the Germans came to Pennsylvania, fraktur was a beautiful yet practial way for them to record important family events such as births, baptisms and weddings. Local school teachers and ministers were among the earliest Fraktur Artists using it to teach school lessons and scriptures. Today the art of fraktur is reviving and it still holds to traditional use of Pennsylvania - German designs and colors. It enhances scriptures, qoutes, house blessing and still records important family events
